Meet The Face Behind Hayes Heating & Cooling

I’m Tim Hayes, proud owner of Hayes Heating & Cooling.

I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

I have always been an entrepreneur, whether it was delivering newspapers as a young boy or starting a small business at a golf-course at the age of fourteen with my best friend. After finishing college, I worked as a heating designer and educator for Pioneer Energy Centers in Virginia in 1975.

Three years later, in 1978, I moved to Seattle to be with my extended family consisting of my parents, my brothers and my Uncle Jack, who lived in Shorewood. It was my father, who lent me ten thousand dollars to start Hayes Heating and I worked out of the basement of his house in Normandy Park.

Having started Hayes Heating in 1978, I was at its helm of affairs for thirty-seven years. Last year, I retired and my son, Kirtan Hayes, took over the business.

The heating business has gone through a tremendous change over the years I have been in business thanks to massive advancements in technology and efficiency.

When I first started in 1978, my parents had an eight feet high by six feet wide monster coal furnace, which used to take up a significant amount of room in the basement. It had been coal-fired in the late 1920s. Then, it was converted to oil heat in the late 40s and in the late 50s, it was converted again to natural gas heat. When I tested the efficiency of the old monster in the basement in 1979, it was only 37% efficient!

Compared to that, our new gas furnace from Coleman is 98% efficient! In less than thirty years, we increased the efficiency by a whopping 61%. And, a new gas furnace is only forty inches tall, about one-sixth the size of the old furnace.

Our old furnace was controlled by a Honeywell round thermostat, an on-off switch that was patented in 1923. Our new thermostats are sophisticated computers, which talk to an even more advanced computer with self-diagnostics, fifty stages of heat, and wi-fi ability to talk to our smart-phones as well. That’s a lot of change!

Over the past four decades in business, my greatest reward was getting to know our customers, some fourteen thousand in total. It was always the people aspect of the business which I loved the most, including going to our customers’ homes and talking to all the good people we have come to know.

My dad, a Colonel in the Air Force for twenty-eight years, not only gave me seed capital for my business but also my business philosophy. He said, “Serve your troops, serve your customers, and protect their best interests. Do right by them, and you will do alright.”

There are three fundamental values we run our business by - Serve God. Serve your country and community. Serve your customers like you want to be treated. I attribute our success to my family and our family values. And also to our great customers, who recognize those values, we strive for. In addition, being with my family in business and my son taking the business into the next century has given me immense satisfaction.

When I am not at work, I indulge in gardening. I am an avid gardener, a golfer, and a practitioner of Yoga.

I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
